books questionnaire (12): A book that you received by someone

It is time to proceed with the books questionnaire, at least I have not even half done! The current category is a relatively simple, because I read quite a lot actually recommended, and a gift book is actually intended as a recommendation. The presented Bartimaeus trilogy (The Amulet of Samarkand , The Golem's Eye, Ptolemy's Gate ) was a recommendation of my current boyfriend (at the time of the recommendation knew we were not even especially good), and at first I had my reservations: The action in which it comes to real existing magician in London, sounded like a Harry Potter rip-off, and anyway I was not particularly interested, again read a teenage (or three).

When I looked but then procures the first volume, in this case I had to know that I had been thoroughly wrong: It may go to wizard and London, but this story is a completely different and plays in a unique, well thought out world. Wizards are not nice people here, but characterless tyrants who terrorize both the majority and the non-magical world of spirits.

magic as such exists at all, buy the spell in a highly complex and grueling training, only the ability to conjure up ghosts from a parallel universe and force in their world, to fulfill their wishes. According unpopular people in the "demons", and the smallest error in the "spells" can cause their own death. People without magic training, represented in the novels by the girl Kitty, are the vagaries of the charming layer to be defenseless, and can neither pity nor expected mercy.

The eponymous demon Bartimaeus is thus at least in comparison with the more sympathetic figure than he is with his slight megalomania and all its vanity, at least not a hypocrite, and in turn even more sense of morality than most people. a The three volumes have separate arcs, show as a whole, but an additional, separate story about the relationship between Bartimaeus and Nathaniel the magician, in the first book is still a child and last a young minister. And as always in good fantasy stories It is basically problems that everyone knows from his own life: the dream of seemingly unattainable goals and the question of morality and their implementation in a corrupt society.

Last year saw the way, a prequel to the trilogy, entitled The Ring of Solomon , but this is the ever-increasing "read more" stack.

a Bartimaeus long way inclined, and not always credible, but always amusing excesses in the footnotes that sometimes take even half a page.
